Interior Department Plans to Phase Out Single-Use Plastics

The strategies will be assessed and updated in 2024.

The Department of the Interior has finalized plans to phase out all single-use plastics on public lands within the next decade. The bureaus and offices of the department jointly drafted a sustainable way to make that transition, and they have committed to reassessing this draft in early 2024. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland made the announcement at the White House Summit on Building Climate Resilient Communities.

“The Interior Department has an obligation to play a leading role in reducing the impact of plastic waste on our ecosystems and our climate,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. “As the steward of the nation’s public lands, and as the agency responsible for the conservation and management of fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats, we are uniquely positioned to do better for our Earth.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Haaland as she oversees the efforts of her department to reduce plastic waste on public lands.
  • For discernment for Director Chuck Sams as he heads the National Park Service.
  • For Interior Department officials as they assess the strategies for stewarding public lands.
